GUESS was launched in 1981 by the brothers Armand, Georges, Maurice and Paul Marciano, who left the south of France in search of the American dream. While they were in France, the brothers started to design ties to sell in Paris and make some extra cash. Later they made blouses for women, then dresses and finally, in 1976, their iconic stone washed denim jeans that would launch the branch to US success.

The brothers opened a series of stores in France under the name MGA but soon after a trip to the United States they decided to take up residence there. In three weeks they opened two stores in the United States and closed their stores in France. The GUESS name was found and together with success of the stonewashed denim jeans with a mottled wash
